Salary Negotiation: How to Ask for a Fair Offer
Negotiating pay is a normal part of getting hired. Follow these steps to ask for a fair salary with confidence and respect.

Many people accept the first offer because they fear losing it. In most cases, employers expect some discussion, especially if you have clear value to offer. Here is a calm way to approach it.
Know your worth
Research typical pay for the role in your city, industry, and experience level. Consider your skills and what you can bring.
Know your limits
Decide:
- The lowest figure you can accept
- Your target figure
- Other benefits that could make the offer attractive, such as flexible hours, training, or allowances
Show appreciation first
Start with thanks. A positive tone keeps the conversation friendly.
Thank you for the offer. I am excited about the role and the team.
Make your request
State what you hope for and why.
Based on my experience in sales and my track record of meeting targets, I was hoping for a monthly salary closer to X. Is there room to discuss this?
Replace X with a realistic number you have researched.
Listen carefully
The employer may explain budget limits, offer a middle figure, or suggest a review after probation. Ask questions to understand.
Consider the full package
Look at:
- Salary and pay date
- Allowances and bonuses
- Health insurance and pension
- Leave days
- Training and growth opportunities
- Travel time and working hours
Be ready for a no
If the employer cannot move on salary, you may ask about a review after three or six months, with clear targets.
Do not bluff
Avoid claiming offers you do not have. Stay honest.
Get it in writing
After agreeing, ask for an updated offer letter that reflects the new terms.
Stay professional
Whether you accept or decline, be gracious. You may meet the same people again.
