How to Screen CVs Faster and Fairer
Screening many CVs can be tiring. Use a simple scoring sheet to shortlist quickly and treat candidates fairly.

When many people apply, screening can be tiring. A clear method saves time and reduces bias.
Start with the job requirements
Before reading CVs, write down the must‑have skills and experience, and the nice‑to‑haves. This becomes your checklist.
Create a simple scoring sheet
List three to six criteria such as relevant experience, key skills, education, communication and stability. Score each CV from 1 to 5 for each criterion and add the scores.
First pass: quick filter
Remove CVs that clearly miss the essentials—wrong location, missing licences, or no relevant experience. Keep brief notes on why they were excluded.
Second pass: closer read
Look at achievements, not only job titles. Check for clear communication and attention to detail.
Watch for red flags, but investigate fairly
Gaps in work history, frequent job changes, or missing details may have good reasons. Ask about them in the interview instead of rejecting automatically.
Reduce bias
Focus on skills and job‑related facts. Avoid judging based on name, age, gender, background, religion or appearance. Using the same checklist for all candidates helps.
Use short phone screens
A five‑ to ten‑minute call can confirm availability, salary expectations and communication skills before a full interview.
Keep records
Note who you shortlisted and why. It helps when others review your decisions.
Respond to applicants
If possible, send a short message to those not selected. It protects your reputation as an employer.
Move quickly
Good candidates often have other options. Aim to make decisions within days, not weeks.
